Middle School Students

Middle and High School Agriculture students and FFA members embarked on an educational field trip to Sunset View Creamery in Odessa, N.Y. This experience offered students a unique opportunity to connect classroom knowledge with real-world agricultural practices while gaining a deeper appreciation for the dairy industry.

During their visit, students explored the fascinating process of cheese making. From understanding how milk is collected and prepared to learning about the science behind curds and whey, the students were able to see each step of this intricate process firsthand. The farm staff shared insights into the care and management of dairy cows, emphasizing the importance of proper nutrition, health, and milking schedules. Did you know that cows need to be milked at least twice a day to maintain their health and productivity?

The students also had the chance to sample a variety of cheeses crafted at the creamery, showcasing the versatility and craftsmanship involved in dairy production. From sharp cheddar to creamy gouda, the tastings offered a delicious conclusion to their hands-on learning experience.

Superintendent Barbara Case expressed her enthusiasm for the trip, stating, “Experiences like these are invaluable for our students. They not only enhance classroom learning but also inspire a deeper understanding and appreciation of the agricultural industry, which is vital to our community and economy.”

Field trips like this are integral to the Agriculture and FFA programs, as they provide students with an immersive look at the hard work and dedication that go into sustainable farming practices. These opportunities also highlight the connections between agriculture, science, and the food we enjoy every day.

A big thank you to Sunset View Creamery for hosting our students and providing them with a memorable and educational experience. It’s through partnerships like these that we can inspire the next generation of agricultural leaders!
