Seventh grade Agriculture students from Spencer-Van Etten Middle School visited Smith Family Maple to learn about the maple syrup production process. The trip provided students with a hands-on opportunity to see how raw sap is transformed into syrup, reinforcing key concepts in their agricultural studies.

During the visit, Al and Allen Smith guided students through their sugar shack, explaining the sugar content of sap, the use of a reverse osmosis system, and the amount of sap required to produce one gallon of syrup. Students observed the evaporator, which operates on natural gas, and concluded the experience with a taste test of freshly made syrup.

“This trip allows students to see firsthand how agricultural products are processed and the science behind food production,” said Middle School Principal, Patrick Peterson.

The visit is part of the district’s continued efforts to provide real-world learning experiences through its agriculture program, helping students understand the role of agriculture in local and global industries.
