Food Service Team

In October 2023, Spencer-Van Etten High School’s Food Service Manager, Michelle Dougherty, was approached by Spring Brook, an organization that provides support and job coaching for individuals with disabilities. They introduced Daniel, a young man from the Spencer community interested in food service. Eager to provide him with an opportunity, Michelle approached Barbara Case to discuss a potential partnership. With Mrs. Case’s approval, Daniel joined the high school’s kitchen staff, working three hours a day under the guidance of his job coach, Jennifer Brill, and later, Garrett Mead.

Over the course of a year, Daniel learned essential skills such as food safety, food prep, and following verbal instructions. As his confidence and abilities grew, Daniel became a valued member of the kitchen team. After completing his work training, he secured a position at a local diner, where he continues to work today.

In recognition of their dedication to inclusivity and support for individuals with disabilities, Garrett, Daniel’s job coach, nominated the Spencer-Van Etten High School kitchen staff for an award from the National Disability Employment Awareness Committee (NDEAC). On October 1, 2024, Michelle Dougherty accepted the award on behalf of the entire team, which includes Denise Presher, Hailee Tadder, and Jillian Sloan. Barbara Case represented the district at the ceremony, celebrating the school’s ongoing commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment.

This recognition highlights the district’s values of community, opportunity, and support for all individuals, reinforcing Spencer-Van Etten’s dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of its students and the wider community.
